Journey Into Engineering at UAA

Journey Into Engineering at UAA

Join UAA College of Engineering faculty for two nights packed with demonstrations, lab tours, and great engineering and computer science discussions!

This is an opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to learn more about the different disciplines at the UAA College of Engineering. Each night, participants can watch live demonstrations in our research labs and meet faculty members from Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Geomatics, and Project Management.

Each night, we will highlight specific departments and offer the following tour stops:

Tuesday, February 20, 6-8 PM

  • Civil Engineering – Dr. Tom Ravens and Dr. Polly Murray will demonstrate different research lab methods, including using a flume to simulate the flowing water of a river and using an actuator to stress test an object.
  • Mechanical Engineering – Dr. Raghu Srinivasan, one of Alaska’s leading experts on corrosion chemistry, will demonstrate the equipment in the Materials Testing Lab.
  • Project Management – LuAnn Piccard, a former longtime executive at Hewlett-Packard, will demonstrate project management thinking through a construction game.
  • Admissions and Advising – Admissions and advising counselors will present important need-to-know information about tuition, scholarships, educational pathways, and more.

Thursday, February 22, 6-8 PM

  • Computer Science & Engineering – Dr. Sebastian Neumayer, an expert on cryptocurrencies and disaster preparedness for networks, will demonstrate field-programmable gate array implementation of a morse decoder and pong game.
  • Electrical Engineering – Dr. Jens Munk, an expert on electromagnetic modeling, will demonstrate the research equipment in the Electrical Engineering Lab, along with a hand-built sound system.
  • Geomatics – Dr. Caixia Wang, a remote sensing expert, and Dr. Gennady Gienko, whose research has included modeling a moon of Saturn, will demonstrate the technology used in mapping physical space.
  • Machine Shop – Corbin Rowe, the machinist for the College of Engineering, will lead a tour through the machine shop, showing off fabrication equipment and ongoing projects.
