Student Competitions

Thank you to the nearly 200 families who participated in the 2024 E-Week Student Competitions! We look forward to welcoming you back to UAA’s campus next year.

The E-Week Student Competitions will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the UAA Engineering and Industry Building (2900 Spirit Dr) from 10am-3pm, with support from the UAA College of Engineering and the professional organizations and companies listed below. This event is free and open to the public.

When: Saturday, February 22, 10am-3pm.
Where: University of Alaska Anchorage, Engineering and Industry Building (2900 Spirit Dr)
Who: K-12 students and their families. Parent or guardian MUST accompany minors.
How Much: FREE

Competitions

We are planning to offer the following competitions, which are great for elementary, middle, and high school students.

  • Tower Shaking and Breaking Competition – Presented by ASHRAE
  • Newspaper Tower Competition – Presented by SPE
  • LEGO Long-o Competition – Presented by ITE
  • Paper Airplane Distance Competition – Presented by DOWL
  • Floatable Moatable Competition – Presented by SAME
  • Egg Drop Competition – Presented by SWE
  • Marshmallow and Spaghetti Tower Competition – Presented by ConocoPhillips

Equipment and supplies for the above activities will be provided for free at the event.

Additionally, middle and high school students are invited to compete in the UAA Model Bridge Strength Competition, presented by Dr. Scott Hamel, UAA Professor and Chair of the Civil Engineering Department, and Alaska’s 2021 Engineer of the Year. Participants will design and build a bridge at home or in class ahead of time, and then Dr. Hamel and his college students in the UAA chapter of ASCE will test the bridges’ strength by crushing them! Winners

For each designated age group, the names and rankings of the top ten contestants will be posted to our website.

Due to low attendance in prior years, we are discontinuing the awards ceremony.

T-Shirts

The first few hundred participants to arrive will receive a free t-shirt. Please note that t-shirts are only intended for youth participants and event volunteers.
